Research has shown that to improve reading fluency, students need lots of practice reading words, phrases, and sentences. Our “Build a Sentence” cards will do exactly that! And the best part…they are FUN!
The deck contains 54 color-coded phrases containing words with consonant blends such as cr, cl, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, st, sl, sk, sn, sp, tr. Each card is labeled at the bottom indicating the phonics skill. Students use the cards to mix and match phrases to make different sentences.
HOW TO USE Build a Sentence Cards
Cards can be used to play a variety of different games as a whole class, in small groups or one-on-one with a student. Games can be set up in stations for students to rotate through and play with a small group or a partner. Another option is to punch a hole in the top corner to put cards on a ring separated by color. Students can flip through to make sentences.
1) To play, begin by placing the cards in three stacks, separated by color.
2) Then choose one card from each stack.
3) Read the sentence. Decide if the sentence makes sense.
4) Check for understanding by asking who the sentence is about, what the subject is doing, and where.
5) Mix and match different phrases to make several different sentences.
6) Reread the sentences to improve fluency.
7) Students can record the sentences they build on paper or on a dry-erase board.
To play as a whole class, pass out one card to each student. Make sure to give out an equal number of each color. Students walk around the room trying to make as many sentences as possible. They record the sentences they created on paper or on a dry-erase board.
Automaticity Drill: Make three columns. Flip over one pink card. This is your target card. Now take the deck of yellow cards and green and match each one to the target card, creating a new word for each card in the pink deck. Once complete, repeat with the next pink card.
