Digraphs, Units & Mixed Review

Research has shown that to improve reading fluency, students need lots of practice reading words, phrases, and sentences. Our “Complete Sentence” cards will do exactly that! And the best part…they are FUN!

The deck contains 54 color-coded sentence cards containing words with the following patterns:

• Digraphs (two letters that make one sound such as chip and dish).
• Units (Three letters where the vowel makes an unexpected sound such as wink and stung).
• Sentences that combine consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) beginning and ending blends, digraphs and units.

 Each card is labeled at the bottom indicating the phonics skill. Students use the cards to improve fluency. Read and reread until fluent. Fluency includes: accuracy, appropriate rate (not too slow or too fast), prosody (timing, phrasing, and emphasis) and expression.

Begin with the digraph cards (pink) before adding the unit cards (orange). The mixed review sentences (blue) should be done last. 

HOW TO USE Complete Sentence Cards

The cards can be used with students individually, in small groups and as a whole class. Another option is to punch a hole in the top corner to put cards on a ring separated by color. Students can flip through to read sentences.

To play as a whole class, pass out one card to each student. Students walk around the room and read their sentence to another student. Students can swap cards and then read to another student. They record the sentences they created on paper or on a dry-erase board. 

To play in small groups or individually, have students practice reading sentences until they are fluent.

Automaticiy Drill

Students randomly choose 10 cards and time themselves to see how quickly they can read through the cards. Try this a few times so students can see how their scores improve. Increase with more cards as students improve.

International shipments may be subject to local duties, taxes (HST, VAT, etc.) and fees (such as brokerage fees). Shipping prices obtained through quotes or during the checkout process from our website do not include these duties, taxes, or fees. You, the receiver, may be contacted by customs or the carrier once the shipments arrives. It is the customer’s responsibility to settle any charges to release the shipment. If a shipment is declined and returned to us (the sender) due to the failure to contact or pay duties, taxes and fees, the shipping fees originally paid to PDX Reading Specialist will not be eligible for a refund. No refunds will be applied until goods arrive back to us. Only goods that arrive back to us in the condition in which they were sent will be eligible for a refund (minus the shipping fees). Additionally, international shipments can take time to clear customs (up to 45 days) once they reach their destination country.
